PV Reliability: Read Qualification Alongside Field Evidence

IEC qualification and a 2025 failure-mode review answer different reliability questions. Procurement needs the tested construction and a site-relevant operating record.

What the qualification establishes

The IEC 61215-1:2021 public catalogue describes design qualification and type approval for terrestrial photovoltaic modules. It explicitly states that test results are not a quantitative prediction of module lifetime. This remains a useful boundary when reviewing reliability claims in 2026.

IEA PVPS published a separate review of degradation and failure modes in February 2025. It discusses how newer cell and module constructions introduce interacting reliability questions. A standards certificate and a failure-mechanism review therefore serve complementary purposes.

Follow the tested construction

Request the model, bill of materials and manufacturing details covered by the qualification report. Compare them with the delivered product, including glass, encapsulation, interconnection and junction-box arrangement. A technology family name cannot establish that the offered construction matches the tested sample.

A material or process change needs a documented review of its effect on the evidence. The relevant retesting requirements and certificate scope should be checked rather than assuming that an earlier report covers every subsequent revision.

Separate test outcomes from field degradation

An accelerated exposure applies defined stresses to a defined sample. A field degradation rate describes a different observation, influenced by climate, installation and operating history. Keep the sample population, duration and measurement method beside either result.

The IEA PVPS review highlights encapsulation, thin-glass durability and junction-box connections among the issues worth investigating. These examples help frame inspection questions; they do not establish that all products using a material share the same failure rate.

Build a project-specific acceptance record

Combine applicable qualification with incoming inspection, electrical measurements and installation records. Record the initial condition so later performance changes can be compared with a meaningful baseline. Define how transport damage and installation defects are handled separately from manufacturing nonconformity.

Safety requirements, warranties and lender conditions also need their own review. Passing design qualification alone cannot demonstrate that every commercial or safety obligation in a tender has been satisfied.

Make the next reliability update comparable

A useful operating update identifies the product revision, site, observation interval and maintenance interventions. Distinguish a power measurement from energy production, and retain exclusions such as curtailment or unavailable monitoring channels.

That documentation makes a reliability comparison more useful than a promised universal service life. It connects the qualified sample with the equipment and conditions that the buyer will actually operate.

Frequently asked questions

Does IEC 61215 predict a fixed operating life?

No. The public standard description explicitly says the test results are not a quantitative prediction of lifetime.

Can a certificate cover any module using the same cell technology?

Check the exact tested construction, scope and applicable change or retesting requirements.

What should accompany a field degradation rate?

Identify the model, climate, observation period, measurement method and treatment of outages or maintenance.
